Monster Curry Review: Best known for spicy Japanese Curry in Singapore

One cold, rainy evening, my colleague and I were at Bugis Junction attending the last of a long string of meetings. The cold weather put us in the mood for something spicy, so I suggested eating at the Monster Curry restaurant in the basement, known for its popular Japanese Curry.

It’s been years since I’ve eaten at a Monster Curry. Back then, it was lauded as the best Japanese curry restaurant in Singapore. I hoped that it still as good as back then.

We arrived to find a line in front of the restaurant. We were informed that it would take around fifteen minutes to get to us, so we decided to spend the time productively and discussed work matters.

When our turn arrived, a friendly waitress escorted us to our seats. She recommended the Monster Combo Curry to us, warned us of the huge portions, and recommended we share one instead of eating it ourselves. Luckily she did so because we would’ve each ordered one.

As we placed our order, we had to decide on the spice level among fourteen different spices over five levels. Some brave souls might take on the Level Five Monster Spicy, but I was satisfied with the Level One Regular Spicy.

It took around twenty-five minutes to receive our food. True to what the waitress said, the serving was huge. In addition to the rice and curry, it had pork katsu, pork shabu-shabu, shrimp tempura, fried fish, and cheese. The aroma alone makes your mouth water.

The curry was mild and spicy-sweet, just the way I like it. My favourite part would be the tempura; crispy, deep-fried batter on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. The thinly sliced and well-seasoned pork shabu-shabu was also delicious. The pork katsu and fried fish were quite ordinary though.

After my visit there, I’m unsure if it still retains its title as the best Japanese curry in Singapore, but it’s still a good place to eat. Next time, I’ll try their Sea Monster Curry.
