Old China Café: Authentic Southeast Asian Cuisine

I will visit Malaysia 2 to 4 times a year because it has always been my 2nd home. Furthermore, I just can’t resist Malaysian food. This gives me a chance to travel around to find some of the finest and popular restaurants in Kuala Lumpur.

I was surfing the internet looking for a place that serves great Nasi Lemak and came across something really unique which brought to my attention. This place is called Old China Café.

I made a lunch trip by taking a Grab from Bukit Bintang. It takes about 20 minutes to arrive to the destination due to bad traffic. The restaurant is located at the back of a narrow alley road. However, walking in gives you a different experience. The setup is very traditional Chinese with antique and old Chinese paintings. It really lives up to the name Old China Café.

I was served by a Bangladesh and maybe that changed the tone a little bit since this is called Old China Café. I expected to see Chinese servers although I have nothing against Bangladesh. The attitude of serving is below expectation. It took more than 10 minutes before they attended to me when I was the only customer in the restaurant that time. No one seems to bother and the two people behind the cashier who were Chinese were busy talking about yesterday’s drinking activities. Yes, it is loud enough for me to hear what they were saying but well, most important the food must be good.

I went for their signature dish; Nasi Lemak. The main reason why I made my trip all the way here is because this is the first time I see Nasi Lemak rice in blue! White and Green perhaps but blue? Hahaha.

I waited for about 15 minutes before my warm plate of Nasi Lemak came. The fragrance was mild but my first taste on the coconut rice was good. Curious on the blue rice, I did some read-up on how it come about. Actually, the blue comes from Blue Flower Pedal which gave the coconut rice an extra taste and fragrance.

Well, the overall experience was average. I have to say that everyone has different taste and for me, this might not be what I rate as the best Nasi Lemak and it is not cheap. However, unique at acceptable standards.
