Good Old Days Review: One-stop Halal Food Court with Singapore Delights

When I was at Sentosa the other day for a meeting, I noticed a large, classy, white and black building with the words “Good Old Days” on the front. For those who don’t know about it, Good Old Days is a halal food court known for its affordable prices. And that day, there was a promotion where I could buy two nasi lemak sets for $11. Given my love for nasi lemak, I couldn’t resist this promotion.

When I arrived at 6pm that Thursday, the restaurant was empty aside from a couple sleeping at one of the tables. The menu wasn’t big, but it had a good selection of local and western delights, sides, kid’s meals, and desserts.

Despite there being only me and the sleeping pair in the entire restaurant, my order still took almost twenty minutes to come. I hoped that the taste was at least worth the wait.

When my order finally arrived, it was awful. I can’t remember the last time I’ve tasted such horrible nasi lemak. Firstly, the sambal was much too sweet. In contrast, the rice was bland and tasteless; I couldn’t taste any hint of coconut or pandan. The chicken was dry, the sausages tasted like they were simply heated up in the microwave and the fish fillet was worse than the frozen ones from NTUC. I’m sure I could make a better nasi lemak at home.

Maybe I shouldn’t be so harsh since it was only $11 for two nasi lemak, but I wouldn’t want this to be the first thing tourists eat when they come here. I want them to have a good first impression of Singapore cuisine.

For me, I think I’ll eat elsewhere the next time I come to Sentosa.
